Tottenham midfielder Maite Oroz has become the latest player in women’s football to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The 27-year-old is set for a spell on the sidelines after Tottenham confirmed she has suffered a ruptured ACL.
Oroz will undergo surgery in the coming weeks before beginning her rehabilitation with the medical team.
The Spanish international is the latest player in women’s football to suffer a knee injury.
On Monday, Bayern Munich confirmed that Lena Oberdorf had suffered her second injury to her right knee in the space of 16 months.
Oberdorf, who only returned to football last month after more than a year out of action, suffered a cruciate ligament tear during a Frauen-Bundesliga match.
Maite Oroz suffered an ACL injury to her right knee during the second-half of Tottenham’s League Cup clash with Birmingham City on Sunday.
The 27-year-old was making just her second start of the season and played a part in Tottenham’s first goal in a 3-0 victory from Olivia Holdt.
Oroz collided with a Birmingham City player while trying to win the ball in the final third.
She instantly went down to the ground and appeared to be in a lot of pain as she received on-field treatment.
Oroz was eventually helped to her feet and off the pitch and was substituted in the 63rd minute of the match.
It is the second time she has ruptured her ACL, having also suffered the injury to her left knee when she played for Athletic Club in 2018.
Oroz’s ACL injury is just the latest in a spate of knee injuries in women’s football.
Tottenham confirmed the injury to Oroz just one hour after Liverpool also revealed that Sophie Roman Haug is to begin a period of rehabilitation after suffering an ACL injury during their League Cup clash with Durham on Thursday.
Barcelona were relieved that Ewa Pajor avoided an ACL tear though their star striker is out for six weeks with a knee injury.
Below is a list of other players who have recently suffered knee injuries this month alone. The list doesn’t include Jill Baijings of Aston Villa who suffered her injury at the end of September.
