Trevor Carson has retired after a knee injury, just over a month after agreeing to join Queen of the South. The former Hartlepool United and Portsmouth goalkeeper began his career at Sunderland.

The club said in a statement that the 38-year-old, Nicky Clark’s first signing, has stepped away as he cannot guarantee fitness for the full campaign after a demanding pre-season. It added that he informed the manager early to allow time to source a replacement, with Clark calling it a major blow and praising the experience he would have offered. The club also wished him well.

Carson started his professional career with Sunderland and gained senior experience on loan at Chesterfield, Lincoln City and Hull City. He left the Black Cats without a first-team appearance in summer 2012, then joined Hartlepool three years later after a spell with Cheltenham Town. He won eight caps for Northern Ireland.

He helped Pools reach the FA Cup third round in 2016, then suffered a 2-1 home defeat by Derby County. The visitors’ squad featured former Sunderland and England striker Darren Bent and Austria international Andi Weimann.

After 63 appearances across two years at Victoria Park, Carson moved to Motherwell. He remained in Scottish football with Dundee United, St Mirren, Ross County and Dundee.
