Ismael Bennacer is expected to feature in Sunday’s game against AS Roma at San Siro, and his return will have a two-fold impact.
Bennacer returned to training with the rest of the squad three days ago, taking part in the entire session at Milanello that morning. What it means is that he is now in the final phase of his recovery after a calf operation a few months ago, and he could be back on the pitch in a few days.
As Tuttosport (via MilanPress) report this morning, the return of Bennacer can be useful both for on and off-field reasons. Firstly, Paulo Fonseca is a great admirer of the skillset that the Algerian has, and it will allow him to rotate the midfield more effectively.
The coach found himself having to make adjustments like using Filippo Terracciano in the double pivot as he did against Verona, but even in this case both Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders started the game so didn’t get any rest.
Regarding matters away from the field, Bennacer’s return could reignite the Saudi Arabia rumours that were swirling in the summer. Alternatively, he could show that he can still contribute for Milan at the highest level, and force reflections on the planned January midfield signing.
