Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has reportedly been left stunned after the club blocked a potential deadline-day move to a Turkish club.

Malacia transfer speculation

Amid acceptance that he has no long-term place at the club, Malacia’s future has been the subject of intense speculation during the winter window.

Banished to Ruben Amorim’s infamous ‘bomb squad’ last summer, Malacia was the only player in the group who was unable to secure an exit from Old Trafford. He remained at the club but playing time has been extremely scarce. Although fully fit, he has found himself out of the first-team picture, with most of his recent action coming in youth-team matches.

His contract expires at the end of the campaign and there has been nothing to suggest that United will look to retain him.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Malacia is on the radar of MLS clubs, although a transfer has yet to materialise. AS Roma, Besiktas and FC Porto have all also been credited with an interest in the Dutchman.

Ahead of the close of the window later on Monday, a new report has surfaced, indicating that Malacia was on his way to Istanbul to complete a move to an unnamed club but United chief Jason Wilcox summoned him back to England.

Malacia update

Joost Blaauwhof of Voetbal International claims that everything seemed in place for Malacia to jet to Turkey for his medical ahead of sealing a transfer.

However, just as he was about to board, Wilcox is said to have called the player and instructed him the move has been “blocked.”

Blaauwhof further claims, “United’s sporting director had changed his mind. Malacia wasn’t going anywhere. Although there were no prospects for the Dutchman, the club, on second thought, preferred to keep him in the squad. Much to the player’s disbelief.”

“Malacia himself desperately wants to get regular playing time. That’s not an option at Manchester United.”

He adds, “Wilcox personally blocked the deal, making Carrington, not Istanbul, the final destination of the trip. It’s a bitter pill for Malacia, who returned to the team based on his positive attitude.”

Voetbal International describe the situation as “sour”, suggesting it could be linked to Patrick Dorgu’s recent injury setback.

Dorgu is expected to be out for 10 weeks after sustaining an injury in last month’s victory over Arsenal.
