Filip Ugrinic has emerged as a cornerstone of Carlos Corberán’s midfield at Valencia, effectively acting as his on-pitch extension, according to AS.

The Swiss arrived in the summer but did not nail down a place until December. Patellar tendon pain hindered his training and delayed his integration. He played only 90 minutes across the first 13 games.

Since then he has started 11 of the last 12, partnering different team-mates in midfield. Pepelu, Javi Guerra, Guido Rodríguez and Lucas Beltrán have rotated, yet Ugrinic remains among the first names on the teamsheet.

He has not scored yet, but he has provided three assists that have yielded important points. His physicality underpins Valencia’s midfield and he has quickly earned the supporters’ respect.

His form has been noted by Switzerland’s coach, who has named him in the provisional squad for upcoming fixtures. With a World Cup this year, the Valencia midfielder has a strong chance of travelling to the United States, Mexico and Canada in the summer.
