Valencia endured a chastening night at Balaídos, conceding four and losing goalkeeper Agirrezabala to injury, with Pepelu finishing between the posts.

According to AS, individual errors defined the defeat. Almeida won a penalty that Pepelu hit the post with, Foulquier conceded one that Borja Iglesias converted, Vázquez played him onside for his second, Diakhaby erred for the third and Iago Aspas added the fourth.

Agirrezabala was largely blameless, even getting a touch on the penalty. Thierry was slow and disastrous on the ball, and Corberán waited too long to replace him. Foulquier’s rash foul summed up a poor outing.

Diakhaby’s error overshadowed a solid display, he had been their best centre-back despite a knock. Copete was beaten repeatedly by Bryan Zaragoza and looked uncertain in possession. Vázquez impressed down the left and helped win the penalty, yet later broke the offside for Borja’s second.

Javi Guerra was ineffective on his 100th league appearance, unable to link with Hugo Duro or Lucas Beltran. Pepelu missed from the spot but later scored from the edge for his first of the season and was Valencia’s most consistent performer. Almeida faded, Duro worked hard without service and was booked, so will miss Elche after five cautions, while the substitutes made little impact, with Luis Rioja quiet, Ramazani forcing the Mingueza error before Pepelu’s goal, Danjuma lively without end product and Diego López introduced late.
