Vincent Kompany has hailed Dayot Upamecano’s progression at Bayern Munich, labelling the centre-back one of the driving forces for the Bundesliga leaders.
Before Sunday’s 17:30 kick-off against Wolfsburg, the head coach said he has worked with Upamecano for 18 months, praising his leadership, defensive stability and marked improvement on the ball, including playing forward and between the lines, plus his understanding with team-mates. According to L'Équipe, the France international is close to extending a contract that expires in June.
Kompany added that the defender can keep developing and become one of the best in the world, while noting there are still steps to take together.
Upamecano, 27, has 35 caps and two goals for France and has been a regular in Bayern’s back line this season. A Valenciennes academy graduate, he moved to Bavaria from Salzburg in summer 2021.
Sporting director Max Ebert said Upamecano is so important to Bayern that they want to renew his deal, which he described as no secret.
