Vozinha produced seven saves as Cape Verde held Spain 0-0 on Monday, and his display has catapulted him to global prominence. According to L'Équipe, his Instagram following jumped from 50,000 to 5.6 million by Tuesday morning.
Until this week, few outside Cape Verde knew Josimar Dias, better known as Vozinha. The 40-year-old is now one of the faces of this World Cup.
In a match Spain dominated statistically, the goalkeeper refused to buckle, helped by a disciplined, well-organised back line. On his World Cup debut, he delivered an excellent performance.
Vozinha plays for Desportivo de Chaves in Portugal’s second division. Together with his team-mates, he has shone a light on his Atlantic archipelago.
It is another uplifting story of this World Cup, with another relative unknown stepping forward after New Zealander Tim Payne.
