Wesley Gassova has joined Real Sociedad in the winter window, adding a Brazilian option at Anoeta. His arrival is intended to bring dynamism to the attack following the absence of Take Kubo. He will wear number 22, previously held by Mikel Goti, now on loan at Córdoba.

The winger, from Al-Nassr, completed his first training session on Saturday at Zubieta under Pellegrino Matarazzo. AS reports that inclusion for the Basque derby against Athletic looks difficult, although if Barrenetxea does not recover in time it cannot be ruled out.

Gassova targets a quick adaptation to Matarazzo’s scheme to become an important option for the decisive LaLiga run-in.

He follows a line of Brazilians at the club that includes centre-back Luiz Alberto, signed from Saint-Étienne in winter 2002 by John Toshack, who played 76 matches. Also in that group are Julio César, on loan from Real Madrid in 2000-01, and Adriano Rossato, signed from Porto in 2004 and noted for free-kicks.

Savio Bortolini joined on a half-season loan from Flamengo in 2007. Jonathas de Jesus arrived from Elche in 2015 and scored seven goals, while Willian José came from Las Palmas in 2016 and produced several prolific campaigns. The most recent was Rafinha Alcántara, who spent six months on loan in 2021-22 from PSG.
