The 24 Championship clubs are set to vote on an overhaul of spending rules that would align the division with the Premier League from next season. At least 16 must back the plan for it to pass.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the proposal would replace Profitability and Sustainability Rules with a squad cost ratio. Player costs would be capped at 85 per cent of football revenue, with around £10m of annual equity allowed to count towards revenue, increasing spending capacity.
Clubs are currently limited to losses of £39m across a three-year period. The change is intended to give sides more scope to invest in pursuit of promotion.
The push follows a season in which Albion and Leicester City were deducted points for PSR breaches. Clubs have already been trialling the squad cost ratio in shadow form to prepare for a switch if approved.
The Championship vote could be tight given contrasting views among clubs.
Elsewhere, League One clubs are voting on aligning their spending rules with League Two and lowering permitted spending from 60 per cent of turnover to 50. Some owners favour a salary cap, though it is not on the ballot. The drive to cut costs comes amid concern about repeatedly bankrolling losses.
