Weverton, the 38-year-old Grêmio goalkeeper, has been named in Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man Brazil squad for the World Cup, becoming the first Acre-born player to be called up twice for the tournament.
According to Globo.com, he edged out Bento of Al-Nassr, Hugo Souza of Corinthians and John of Nottingham Forest, all listed in a 55-player provisional squad, and will join Alisson and Ederson as Brazil’s three goalkeepers.
Unlike the previous World Cup cycle, when he was picked in almost every squad, he featured less frequently between 2022 and 2026, making this selection a surprise.
At Qatar 2022 he was third choice and played a few minutes in the 4-1 win over South Korea in the round of 16.
This season he moved to Grêmio after a long, decorated spell at Palmeiras, where he won the Copa Libertadores, Copa do Brasil and Brasileirão, among other honours. He has already lifted the Campeonato Gaúcho this year.
Weverton was a standout in Brazil’s historic Olympic gold in 2016, saving a penalty in the final against Germany. Born in Rio Branco, Acre, he also has two Série B titles, with Corinthians in 2008 and Portuguesa in 2011.
