Weverton’s experience has propelled a Brazil recall for the 2026 World Cup, the Grêmio goalkeeper named on Monday by Carlo Ancelotti after a rapid revival.
According to Globo.com, Grêmio pursued him despite internal resistance, with Palmeiras releasing him for free after a hand injury saw Carlos Miguel take his place. Businessman Celso Rigo helped cover costs, including a signing-on fee.
He signed through December 2028, the length decisive with Palmeiras offering only one more year. He has played 29 games, missing out only once when Luís Castro rotated against Juventude in the Gauchão.
His second outing brought a 4-2 Gre-Nal defeat after an error coming off his line, but he steadied quickly and became a dressing-room leader.
He underpinned draws with Inter, Remo and Bahia, and excelled even in defeat to Flamengo. Grêmio share the Brasileirão’s fifth-best defence with São Paulo, conceding 18.
Ancelotti said Brazil had tested Bento, Hugo Souza and John this year, and for this tournament wanted another experienced option, pointing to Weverton’s profile.
Brazil assemble at Granja Comary on 27 May, face Panama at the Maracanã on 31 May, then travel the next day. Weverton is expected to miss Grêmio v Corinthians on 30 May, with Gabriel Grando still out, so 22-year-old Thiago Beltrame could debut.
