Kieran McKenna is in need of reinvigorating his midfield for the coming Championship season, having lost both Massimo Luongo and Sam Morsy on free transfers, with Kalvin Phillips and Cajuste himself seeing their loan deals expire this summer.

Though, per Fabrizio Romano, it appears as though the Swedish international is set for a return to England from his current employers, Napoli, with the two clubs having reportedly agreed on a loan deal with an obligation to purchase Cajuste outright should Ipswich achieve promotion.

The Tractor Boys have completed the signing of Dutch midfielder Azor Matusiwa from French club Stade Rennes for a fee believed to be around £7.8 million as McKenna looks to bolster his midfield options after the aforementioned departures.

Midfielder Cameron Humphreys returns to the club after a successful season on loan with Wycombe Wanderers in League One, whilst Jack Taylor, who played a sporadic role for the club in the Premier League last season, remains another option for McKenna in the middle of the park.

Cajuste was among Ipswich's top earners last season

Last season, Ipswich had the lowest wage bill in the Premier League, so it made sense that they were among the favourites for relegation at the beginning of the season, which ultimately came to fruition.

McKenna took the Tractor Boys to back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship before their first Premier League campaign in over 22 years, so it was understandable that they possessed the lowest wage bill in the league.

Ipswich brought in 12 players in the summer following promotion and a further four in January, but were unable to avoid the drop.

Cajuste, 25, was one of those players brought in during the summer from Napoli and, upon his arrival, was comfortably one of the best-paid players at Portman Road.

Only Kalvin Phillips, Ben Godfrey and Axel Tuanzebe, who have all since departed the club, earned more than the Swedish international's estimated £35,000 per week salary.

Should Cajuste complete his loan switch to Suffolk for the upcoming season, he will once again be one of the highest earners at the club.

Cajuste's signing is excellent business for Ipswich

Having already had a season at Portman Road with McKenna under his belt, Cajuste will not require much time to get back up to speed.

The Swedish midfielder played 30 times in the Premier League under the Northern Irish manager last season, scoring once and grabbing an assist.

However, this season brings the possibility of seeing a completely different Cajuste. Given Ipswich are among the favourites for the Championship title and are expected to be able to dominate most matches, the Swede's game might reach the next level.

McKenna will be hoping that a midfield pairing of Cajuste and Matusiwa will be enough to control the midfield against the vast majority of opposition next season.

With the Tractor Boys travelling to St Andrews on Friday to open the Championship season, Cajuste, along with other rumoured signing Chuba Akpom, may not have signed in time to play a role in the game.

McKenna will be hoping to get Cajuste signed up as fast as possible in what will be, no doubt, another hectic and highly competitive Championship season.
