QPR striker Rumarn Burrell has thanked supporters upon his return from injury

Queens Park Rangers will almost certainly be playing Championship football once again next season, with the R's' play-off hopes now looking incredibly slim, whilst they are in no threat of relegation.

Julien Stephan's first season in charge of QPR is drawing to a close, and whilst the French boss has shown glimpses of what a side under his leadership can look like, it hasn't been enough to push for a top-six place this time around.

Numerous additions were made at Loftus Road over the summer, specifically in the attack, with the likes of Richard Kone, Koki Saito, Kwame Poku, Karamoko Dembele, and Rumarn Burrell all joining the club.

Burrell was arguably the least talked about, joining from League One Burton Albion for a fee of just over £1 million, having enjoyed a solid season with the Brewers after his return to England from Scotland.

However, Burrell has arguably been the best out of the bunch, and following his return against Bristol City from a three-month setback, the Jamaican has sent a message to QPR fans.

With ten goals and three assists in 26 Championship games prior to his injury, Burrell was averaging a direct goal contribution every other game with QPR in what is his first full season in the second tier.

The 25-year-old had previously spent time with Middlesbrough whilst the Teesside outfit were in the second tier, but he was unable to make his mark at the Riverside, and after scoring goals for fun in Scotland with Falkirk and Cove Rangers, he returned to England with Burton, and is now in West London.

In QPR's home victory over Sheffield Wednesday in January, Burrell landed awkwardly and picked up an injury which ruled him out for three months, and he finally made his return to action on Saturday in their goalless draw at home to Bristol City.

Upon his return, Burrell has sent a message to QPR fans.

In his post on Instagram, Burrell has said that he is grateful to be back doing what he loves, playing football, and thanked all the QPR fans who have shown him support during his difficult spell out.

Certainly, QPR's play-off hopes may well have still been alive had Burrell stayed fit, with his goals and assists proving difficult to replace.

The likes of Saito, Kone, or Poku have been able to step up in the Jamaican's absence, and with the West London side almost certainly playing second-tier football once again next season, they will be hoping Burrell can stay fit and provide the platform to have a real go at the top six next campaign.

Rumarn Burrell has quickly become one of QPR's most influential players, and Julien Stephan must hang his hat on him next season

It would be fair to suggest that, whilst it hasn't been a bad season by any circumstances at QPR, there will be an element that this campaign was a missed chance.

The play-off race has been wide open for the majority of the season, with Southampton climbing from nowhere into the top-six, whilst Hull City, who were unable to spend money on any permanent arrival in the summer, have been fighting towards the top of the division most of the year.

Heading into next season, Stephan must hang his hat on Burrell to be the main man up front for QPR, as whilst the club is certainly not lacking in talented forwards, the Jamaican has been the standout when fit.
