John Pelling has been working with Albion on Profitability and Sustainability Rules matters, his role coming into focus after reports on Monday alleging a PSR breach.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the long-serving football operator was appointed in the autumn to troubleshoot the club’s finances and PSR position.

Before arriving at The Hawthorns, Pelling spent years doing similar work at Stoke City and is seen as an expert at navigating PSR regulations.

His finance career followed a degree in industrial economics. He began outside football with KPMG UK, then moved into the game in the 1990s.

Pelling joined Nottingham Forest as finance director in 1998 and remained until 2013. His 14-year spell coincided with Forest dropping to the second tier and struggling to return to the top flight.

He then spent two years at Bristol City, initially leading the academy before just over a year as chief executive.

After 10 months as Bolton Wanderers’ head of finance, he joined Stoke in 2017 as head of finance, played a major role on PSR, and sat on the club’s senior management committee.

Pelling also contributed to an EFL working group debating rule changes many clubs had hoped would take effect this summer, a plan knocked back following Manchester City’s legal challenge.

At Albion he has worked quietly in the background to position the club for the 31 December accounts submission and thereafter.
