Leeds United’s Welsh quartet will not return to Thorp Arch early despite Wales exiting the World Cup play-offs, with a Tuesday friendly keeping them on international duty.
The Welsh FA had set out in December that, if Bosnia & Herzegovina defeated Cymru, a second fixture would follow during this window, with teams required to play twice.
Ethan Ampadu captained in Cardiff, with Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon and Daniel James also starting. James struck from around 30 yards on 51 minutes to put Wales ahead, then Darlow produced a superb stop from Ermedin Demirovic.
Edin Dzeko flicked in from a corner with four minutes left, and it finished 1-1 after 90 and 120. In the shootout, Neco Williams and Brennan Johnson missed, condemning Wales to defeat.
"We're lost for words. We can hold our heads up high because we fought for everything, sometimes in life things don't go your way." He was speaking to Match of the Day Wales.
"It's tough to take, I thought we played really well."
"We're devastated, that's the only word for it."
