A former Barcelona midfielder has named the English forward he’d like to see replace Robert Lewandowski at the LaLiga giants.

Gaizka Mendieta, who spent one season on loan at Barcelona from Lazio in 2002/03, told PlayUK: “I would love to see Harry Kane at Barcelona, in LaLiga.

“He’s a fantastic player who is, again, so unlucky with these trophies. Yeah, why not? We saw Robert Lewandowski arrive, nobody thought he would come to Barça, but he did.”

Lewandowski’s stint at Barcelona has been incredibly fruitful, with the 37-year-old having lifted three LaLiga titles, three Supercopa trophies and the Copa del Rey.

In a post on social media, he commented: “After four years full of challenges and hard work, it’s time to move on.

“I leave with the feeling that the mission is complete. Four seasons, three championships.

“Barça is back where it belongs.”

And Mendieta feels that Barcelona are now in a stronger position to attract star talent like Kane, thanks to their improving finances and domestic dominance on the pitch over the course of the last two seasons.

The 52-year-old explained that “right now, Barça is in a much better financial position than it was two or three years ago. Looking at the team’s ability to rebuild and be competitive and win. Well, they’ve won LaLiga twice now.

“I think that will attract a lot of big players,” he continued, suggesting that they may decide “to go for less money than they would normally go to another club, just to go to Barcelona because it’s Barcelona and to prioritise winning trophies there, rather than being somewhere they might not win.

Mendieta also suggested that while Lewandowski “has obviously got options” in the transfer window, “it would be exciting” to see the former Bayern Munich talisman at Wrexham’s Stōk Cae Ras.

“Robert Lewandowski said he is open to taking a step down and if he wants to be an actor after he retires, Wrexham is the place to go!

“He’s looking for the next step. If he wants to continue playing football, he’s obviously got options. I’m not sure about the level of the league or the category.

“I think his quality and ability can still provide something. I don’t think he will be short of options, so let’s see what happens. But it would be exciting.”
