Manchester City’s Spanish manager, Pep Guardiola, will serve a suspension that will prevent him from leading his team from the bench during the upcoming matches against West Ham United on March 14 and Chelsea FC on April 12.

The Citizens’ tactician was shown a yellow card during the FA Cup round-of-16 clash against Newcastle United on Saturday night. The sanction came after a heated protest to fourth official Lewis Smith, with Guardiola arguing that a clear foul on his player Jérémy Doku had not been called.

According to this season’s Premier League regulations, a manager is suspended for one match after three yellow cards and for two matches after six cautions.

Guardiola criticizes refereeing: “Some decisions are hard to understand”

After the match, Guardiola expressed his frustration in a statement to TNT Sports: “Listen, it’s not about whether it’s a penalty or not. There are some refereeing decisions that are hard for me to understand.”

He added: “When Jérémy is pulled back from behind, it’s a foul everywhere… except here. That’s the situation. So there will be a two-match suspension. I’ll take a vacation during these two games and the team will carry on.”

The Spanish coach also joked about his disciplinary record: “We probably hold the record for the most yellow cards for a manager. Two-match suspension… After ten years, there are still things I don’t understand.”

Guardiola concluded: “Of course, I’ll always defend Doku and all my players.”
