Wieffer brace moves Brighton up to ninth | OneFootball

Mats Wieffer scored both goals as Brighton & Hove Albion earned a 2-0 win at Turf Moor against relegation-threatened Burnley.

Burnley fans no doubt know they will be back in the Championship next season but they did have moments against Brighton in what was a frustrating afternoon from the Clarets.

Indeed, the home side briefly thought they had taken the lead early on when Jaidon Anthony fired an effort past Bart Verbruggen but the Burnley man had just edged offside.

Instead it was the Seagulls who eventually took the lead just before half time. Burnley struggled to get the ball clear before Pascal Gross put in a low cross from the left that Wieffer ran onto at the far post to make it 1-0.

Just like with the first half, the second half began with Burnley putting the ball in the net early on only to be denied by the offside flag.

This time it was a James Ward-Prowse freekick that bounced just in front of Verbruggen who could only parry the effort away. Bashir Humphreys was on hand to follow up on the rebound but was just offside.

Burnley pushed for an equaliser and probably did deserve one but instead conceded late on. This time the ball bounced to Wieffer just on the edge of the area and he fired his effort past Martin Dúbravka to wrap the game up.

That result moves the Seagulls up to ninth in the table back ahead of Bournemouth who defeated Arsenal earlier today. Meanwhile, Burnley suffered their 20th defeat of the Premier League season.
