Wolves academy faces possible downgrade, decision due Monday | OneFootball

Wolves risk losing Category One academy status despite plans to upgrade facilities, with a decision due on Monday.

A Wolves spokesperson said the club remain in dialogue with the Professional Game Academy Audit Company over the categorisation. They said Wolves have made a significant commitment to improve facilities and remain confident in the progress and plans, but declined further comment while talks continue.

The club are also engaged with the Men's Professional Game Committee regarding the 2026/27 process. Wolves have held the top ranking since 2012, but the latest audit raised concerns over pitches, classrooms and changing rooms that could prompt a downgrade to Category Two.

Coaching, education, sports science, medical provision and player care were not cited as issues. In response, a £10million project began in January and is due to complete by summer 2027 to align facilities with Category One standards, with chairman Nathan Shi and the leadership viewing the academy and its improvement as crucial.

Planning permission has been submitted and the club hope to retain Category One while work is carried out. Wolves have also committed £700,000 for dressing room and classroom space to meet regulations for the coming season.

They believe their commitment demonstrates willingness to deliver what is required and say investment in the academy will continue. Category One status permits nationwide recruitment without geographical limits and access to higher tiers of youth development and Premier League funding.
