Chelsea’s team news for today’s game against Nottingham Forest is out, and by far the most significant piece of team news is that Moises Caicedo is on the bench.
The midfielder has been ever present this season, and in recent weeks has finally being getting serious media recognition for his incredible form. It’s not an ideal time to miss him.
Moises Caicedo stat pointed out by Kieran Gill.
Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail has pointed out a really scary stat about Chelsea’s success rate without the midfielder, noting that “Chelsea have not won a Premier League game without Moises Caicedo in the starting XI since he signed in 2023.”
Of course, the twist is that there have only been four times Caicedo has not starting eleven for the Blues since he signed for the club.
In 2023/2024 he played 33 games from the start, last season he played all 38, and this is the first one he’s missed this season.
So it’s just the four games under Mauricio Pochettino – against West Ham we lost 3-1, against Bournemouth we drew 0-0, against Newcastle we lost 4-1 and against Wolves we lost 2-1.
All four were away from home.
If you’re wondering what happened in that one spare game – it took place before the deal to sign Caicedo was done at the start of the 2023-2024 season.
Things should go better today – Nottingham Forest are in serious trouble and we have players like Romeo Lavia fit to replace Caicedo. But it will be interesting to see how the team adapt to playing without him. Malo Gusto has been called into midfield, and he will have to work his socks off to replace the Ecuador star.
Caicedo is not the only Blue missing from the starting XI today, with a key defender absent too.
