Xavi Simons reveals new role shaped Spurs transfer decision

Xavi Simons has explained why he is playing in a new position after helping Spurs beat West Ham United on his Premier League debut this weekend.

The Netherlands international joined the Lilywhites from RB Leipzig in a £51 million deal in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur put three past their London rivals away from home on Saturday afternoon to go second in the table with three wins from their first four games of the new campaign.

Simons played a key role in kickstarting a strong second half for Thomas Frank’s side, setting up Pape Matar Sarr’s opener from a corner kick shortly after the interval.

The Hammers were then dealt a major blow when Tomas Soucek was sent off for a high challenge, catching Joao Palhinha with his studs.

Lucas Bergvall doubled their lead moments later before Micky van de Ven fired in their third goal to complete a comfortable day at the office for the north London outfit.

“Really happy with the win and to make my debut in the Premier League, I’m very happy. Right now I’m here with a magnificent team,” Simons told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“We know the set-pieces are just as important as the open-play. At half-time we spoke about it and I found Pape.”

Frank deployed Simons on the left wing rather than his preferred central role behind the striker, but the attacker revealed that it’s one of the reasons he joined Spurs following talks with the manager about his place in the team.

“I’ve played my whole life as a number 10 but I’ve started playing on the left to try and help the team with scoring goals and getting assists. That’s one of the things I spoke with the coach and one of the reasons why I came here.”
