Yeremy Pino faces World Cup exit with collarbone injury

Spain fear Yeremy Pino ‘s World Cup is over after the winger suffered a suspected broken collarbone.

The Crystal Palace forward was hurt in the closing stages of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Uruguay, falling awkwardly on his left shoulder following a challenge.

His night ended in considerable pain. Pino, introduced as a substitute in the 66th minute, was unable to be replaced as Spain had already used all their changes. He battled on to the final whistle before leaving the stadium with his arm in a sling.

Luis de la Fuente feared the worst afterwards. “It looks like Yeremy may have broken his collarbone,” the head coach said. “Tomorrow they are going to do some tests and we will see how far the injury is.”

He also paid tribute to the player’s resolve. “The man is suffering a lot and the effort he has made is tremendous,” De la Fuente added.

“Possibly with a broken collarbone, to hold on until the end of the match… It has been heroic.”

A fracture would almost certainly end his tournament. With the knockout stages now beginning, Pino would have no time to recover from such an injury.

It was a costly victory in more ways than one. Nico Williams, another second-half substitute, limped off with a suspected groin problem.

The Athletic Club winger had only just returned from injury, and his involvement is now also in doubt.

The result, at least, went Spain’s way. They topped Group H with seven points, setting up a last-32 tie in Los Angeles on July 2 against either Austria or Algeria.

There was a major shock behind them, too. Cape Verde stunned the group by finishing as runners-up, having held Spain to a goalless draw earlier in the campaign.
