Yoane Wissa will be out of action for at least the next four weeks after the Newcastle United striker sustained an injury while on international duty.
The 29-year-old is still waiting to make his debut for the Magpies following his £55 million move from Brentford in the summer transfer window.
Wissa missed pre-season and the Bees’ opening few games of the new Premier League campaign while he trying to force through a move to St James’ Park.
Despite this, he started in both of DR Congo’s World Cup qualifiers against South Sudan and Senegal, and returned with a knee injury that Eddie Howe confirmed will keep him sidelined until after the October international break.
Wissa has already missed games against Wolves and Barcelona, and will sit out upcoming matches against Bournemouth, Bradford, Arsenal, Union Saint-Gilloise and Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle are hopeful Wissa will return against Brighton on 18 October, but Howe admits it’s guaranteed he will be fit in time.
“Everyone wanted Yoane to be fit. There’s nothing personally I would have done differently. We did everything we did as a football club to try to look after Yoane,” he said.
“But it’s like with any footballer when they go away on international duty, you’re not in control of the minutes they play and unfortunately, he gets injured and now we just have to deal the best we can with that situation.
“We think he’ll be out until after the next international break. He’s sort of got a race on to be fit for that Brighton game. Hopefully he can make it and then, of course, he’ll be such an important player for us.”
Newcastle travel south this Sunday for a meeting with Howe’s former side, Bournemouth, with kick off set for 2pm.
