Blind footballers win German championship for the first timeFor the first time in the department’s short history, and a year earlier than coach Enrico Göbel’s envisaged when he took office in 2024, the blind footballers have won the national title. At the season finale in Nuremberg, it was once again Jonathan Tönsing who made the difference. The top scorer increased his tally to an incredible 24 goals for the season in a commanding 2-0 win over SF BG BLISTA Marburg, once again winning the Golden Boot for the Bundesliga’s top scorer. “We’ve had to work hard for a long time to get to this day. The excitement was almost palpable. We were determined to do it – and we did ,” Tobias Willmroth gushes. The deputy head of the integration sports department, a club member for 27 years and responsible for our blind footballers for nine years, is overwhelmed.

“When I look into the faces of all our players, I see nothing but pride. Everyone knows that we have achieved something great today. We can write this day into our history books,” emphasises captain Ted Altunbas. Shortly afterwards, he accepts the championship trophy from DFB sporting director Rudi Völler and lifts it high into the sky. But that’s not all for integration sport at the Black & Yellows: the BVB women’s team wins the German championship for the fourth time, while the men’s team finish as runners-up.

Hans-Joachim Watzke is elected BVB president

In November, what is probably the longest general meeting in Borussia Dortmund’s nearly 116-year history ends after 13 hours. Hans-Joachim Watzke is the new president and thus the successor to Dr Reinhold Lunow – the long duration is primarily due to the hybrid voting procedure, which was used for the first time. Watzke is elected the 19th president in the history of BVB with 59% of the votes cast. Daniel Lörcher is elected vice-president with 71% of the members’ votes. The previous vice-president, Silke Seidel, received 61% of the votes cast in the election for treasurer. Norbert Dickel and Gerd Kolbe were appointed honorary members. 1,951 of the 238,109 club members were present in Hall 3 of the Westfalenhallen, with a further 4,128 participating online.

Following Watzke’s departure as chairman of the management board of the KGaA, the presidential committee makes decisions on future areas of responsibility and responsibilities: Carsten Cramer becomes the new spokesman for the management board. The 56-year-old Westphalian is responsible for strategy, communication, marketing, sales, digitalisation and internationalisation. The responsibilities of Thomas Tress, 59, in the areas of finance, organisation, legal affairs and investor relations, and sporting director Lars Ricken, 49, remain unchanged. Svenja Schlenker, 42, is appointed managing director for human resources and continues to be responsible for women’s football at BVB.

Three Borussia players become handball World Cup runners-up with Germany

The German women’s national team has one success after another to celebrate at the Handball World Cup: without losing a single point, the team which includes Borussia players Alina Grijseels, Lisa Antl and Sarah Wachter, fight their way into the main round by overcoming Iceland, Uruguay and Serbia.

The next three games, which will decide who advances to the knockout stage, are played in front of over 10,000 spectators at Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle – and the fans spur the DHB team on to peak performances: After clear victories over the Faroe Islands, Montenegro and Spain, Germany reached the quarter-finals, where Grijseels and Co. defeated Brazil 30-23 – also in Dortmund. For the first time since 2007, the women’s national team reached the semi-finals of a major tournament, and that’s not all: after their 29-23 victory over France, the Germans are guaranteed a medal.

The DHB team’s opponents in the final in Rotterdam are record title holders and tournament favourites Norway. The match is accordingly tough for the Germans, but they manage to hold their own against the highly favoured Norwegians for long stretches. The match remains open until shortly before the end, with Germany trailing by just one goal with the score at 20-19 in the 56th minute. In the end, however, the national team have to admit defeat, losing 23-20. Alina Grijseels scores four goals, Lisa Antl scores once. The DHB team sign the Golden Book of the City of Dortmund one day after the final. For Dutch Borussia players Lois Abbingh, Alieke van Maurik and Kelly Vollebregt, it is not quite enough for a medal: their national team lose 33-31 (12-11) in extra-time to France in the match for third place.
