David Ornstein has reiterated Enzo Maresca is thought of very highly by Manchester City hierarchy, but it’s a big if whether Pep Guardiola leaves this summer.

Maresca was linked with the City job earlier this week, just a few days after he admitted after the win against Everton he’d had his worst 48 hours at the club.

However, Maresca confirmed he would be Chelsea manager next season, as he came out fighting in his press conference ahead of the draw against Newcastle.

David Ornstein on Enzo Maresca Manchester City links

The former Leicester boss is believed to have an internal problem at Chelsea, which is thought to stem from what the Italian felt was a lack of support internally after the defeat to Atalanta.

The 45-year-old’s comments before the Newcastle game have drawn a temporary line under speculation over his future, but it’s unlikely this is the last we’ll hear of the speculation this season.

Chelsea reportedly aren’t planning to part ways with Maresca, but are said to appreciate Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior.

Maresca dismissed the City links as speculation, but Ornstein has once again doubled down on City’s interest in him.

“Enzo Maresca is thought of very highly by the Man City hierarchy. It remains a big if for now if Guardiola leaves Man City this summer,” he told NBC Sports Soccer as quoted on X.com.

Willy Caballero likely to be on the bench against Aston Villa

Whilst Maresca continues to be linked with City, he unfortunately won’t be on the touchline against Aston Villa next weekend.

He got booked against Newcastle and will now serve a touchline ban for the second time this season, after being sent off against Liverpool.

Willy Caballero will likely be on the touchline as was the case earlier in the season when the Blues recorded a 3-0 win away at Nottingham Forest.
