Abel Ferreira facing unprecedented mid-season pause at Palmeiras

Palmeiras are set for an unusually long mid-season pause under Abel Ferreira. According to Nosso Palestra, the break will stretch beyond 50 days and comes with the side seven points clear of Flamengo in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

This contrasts with 2022, when the World Cup in Qatar halted the calendar only after Palmeiras had already sealed the league title. That stoppage had little impact on a campaign already secured.

At the start of 2026, Ferreira endured one of his shortest pre-seasons since taking charge. The squad had fewer than five days of preparation before the first competitive game, demanding accelerated physical work and rapid tactical adjustments.

Now the staff can ease workloads, restore tired bodies and deepen tactical detail without the strain of matches every three days. Players returning from injury will also have more time to recover and reintegrate.

The pause could function as a second pre-season, though World Cup call-ups will be absent.

Palmeiras players called up for the tournament are Gustavo Gómez, Maurício and Ramón Sosa with Paraguay, and Jhon Arias with Colombia. Flaco López is with Argentina, while Piquerez and Martínez are with Uruguay.
