Girona managed to get some business done on deadline day to give Michel Sanchez some much needed reinforcements, but their manager was most intent on ensuring whomever he has at his disposal is 100% committed to the cause. That will not be made easier by other clubs still looking at their players.

Michel voiced his concerns in a distraught post-match interview after Villarreal thumped Girona 5-0 in week two. He asked that his players put the transfer window out of their minds and focused on their La Liga campaign – one of their captains, Arnau Martinez, will be key in conveying that message.

AC Milan retain interest in Arnau Martinez

However Martinez, who himself was heavily linked with a move in the summer, still has suitors. The 22-year-old had a breakout season two years ago, but still remains a talented option at right-back, also capable of playing in the middle of defence and in midfield. Tuttosport, via ED, say that ahead of the January window, the AC Milan will still be looking to strengthen their backline with Arnau.

The matter is not helped by the fact that Arnau has a release clause of €14m in his contract, considered relatively affordable for any European giant. Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has been using a three at the back system, with Alexis Saelemakers and then Yunus Musah used on the right in his first two games, although Arnau could be used on the right of a three too.

Girona defensive depth this season

Michel does have options at right-back, with Alejandro Frances and Hugo Rincon (on loan from Athletic Club) both naturals at the position. Together with Arnau though, they form three of just eight defenders on their books this season, meaning they are just an injury away from reduced options. That takes on particular significance when taking into account that Daly Blind (35), Axel Witsel (36), Alex Moreno (32) and David Lopez (35) are well into veteran territory.
