The Rossoneri are aiming to prolong an impressive unbeaten run, while the Rossoblu desperately need to arrest a poor sequence of results that has brought just one league win in their last 10 league outings.
Under Massimiliano Allegri, Milan have firmly established themselves in this season’s title race, sitting second in the table on 47 points from 22 games. They have racked up 13 victories, drawn eight times and lost only once so far.
Their away form has been particularly strong, with Milan unbeaten in all 11 league matches on the road, collecting six wins and five draws. Most recently, they shared the points in a 1-1 draw against AS Roma, extending their unbeaten streak even if their attacking play lacked a cutting edge on the night.
Team news offers Allegri a mixed picture. Christian Pulisic, Milan’s leading scorer this season with 10 goals in all competitions, is nursing physical discomfort and is considered doubtful for the trip to Bologna. January recruit Niclas Füllkrug is also carrying a broken toe.
There are further issues in wide areas and up front. Alexis Saelemaekers has been ruled out after suffering a recurrence of the adductor problem that forced him off against Roma, leaving Allegri without a versatile option on the flank. Santiago Gimenez, meanwhile, remains sidelined as he continues his rehabilitation following ankle surgery in December, with the club targeting a return around mid-February if his recovery progresses as planned.
In training sessions leading up to the game, Milan have been working on contingency plans in case Pulisic fails to make the squad. Christopher Nkunku and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been readied as alternative attacking solutions, with both players capable of operating in advanced roles and offering different profiles in the final third.
Possible AC Milan starting XI: Maignan; Tomori, Gabbia, De Winter; Saelemaekers, Ricci, Modric, Rabiot, Bartesaghi; Nkunku, Leao
The match will kick off at 7:45pm BST on Tuesday, 3rd February.
