CAF president Patrice Motsepe announced the Africa Cup of Nations finals will expand from 24 to 28 teams, following the confederation’s executive committee meeting in Cairo on Sunday.
The finals have featured 24 participants since 2019, and four more nations will be added, with no further details given.
Motsepe confirmed the next edition will take place in 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as planned.
Another tournament will be staged in 2028, after which the competition is set to settle into a four-year cycle.
From 2029, CAF will also launch a Nations League, a biennial tournament involving 16 teams.
