Vasco have moved to find a new manager after sacking Fernando Diniz on Sunday night, minutes after a 1-0 defeat to Fluminense in the Campeonato Carioca. According to Globo.com, club chiefs met straight after the match to define the target profile and discussions are continuing today, Monday.
The recruitment focus is on assessing the squad’s characteristics and seeking coaches whose work aligns with the current group. Each candidate’s tactical profile is under debate, and with a turbulent start to the Campeonato Brasileiro there is seen to be no margin for error for the remainder of the season.
Interpersonal management is another key criterion. Diniz had been well regarded day to day at the training ground and by the squad, but he departs with some relationships strained.
The hierarchy have not yet contacted candidates. Names are being discussed and vetted carefully by the football department, with the immediate focus on finalising the profile before opening talks in the coming days.
Even so, the search is viewed as urgent and processes are being accelerated to appoint a replacement as soon as possible.
Preference leans towards a coach experienced in Brazilian football, though options abroad are also under consideration. Admar Lopes is seen as an asset because of his strong access to the overseas market.
