Ahly earmark Cardoso as potential candidate to take over the reins

Al Ahly have added Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso to the shortlist of potential candidates to take over the vacant hot seat in Cairo.

The Egyptian giants parted ways with coach Jose Riveiro after a string of poor results during his short three-month stint at the helm.

Having arrived in Cairo on the back of lifting five domestic cup titles with Orlando Pirates, his spell up North was tumultuous as he failed to win a single match at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Additionally, Riveiro picked up five points out of a possible 12 in the first four matches of the Egyptian Premier League, leaving Ahly in a dismal 12th place.

With the urgent need to find a new leader in the dugout, former Zamalek boss Jose Gomes has been linked with the job, alongside Paulo Bento.

Now, the Red Devils are said to have recently earmarked Cardoso as one to watch, but sources indicate he is, however, not top of the list at this stage.

The Portuguese tactician reached back-to-back CAF Champions League finals with Esperance de Tunis and Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively in the past two seasons.

Despite losing both deciding matches, his credentials and experience in Africa’s elite club competition make him an feasible option for the record 12-time African champions.
