Alan Shearer has named Brian Brobbey in his Premier League team of the week after Sunderland’s 2-1 win at Newcastle United, while Troy Deeney recognised teenager Chris Rigg.
Regis Le Bris’ side fell behind in the 10th minute at St James’ Park, levelled through Chemsdine Talbi, then Brobbey struck in the 90th minute to settle the Tyne-Wear derby. Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Shearer later reflected on the Dutchman’s impact.
The Newcastle great regarded Brobbey as Sunderland’s standout, noted his £17 million move from Ajax against Newcastle’s summer spend on forwards, and criticised the hosts’ inconsistency and second-half response, adding that Sunderland fully merited victory.
Brobbey also features in Shearer’s XI alongside Everton forward Beto and Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, a former Black Cats loanee, with both hitting two goals over the weekend.
In his Premier League team of the week, Deeney praised Rigg’s disciplined work on the right flank at St James’ Park, judging it a solid and reliable display rather than a spectacular one.
