Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka is set to remain at the Stadium of Light this summer, a decision Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith views as a big boost.
The Swiss midfielder had been strongly linked with Chelsea last month, with the Blues even tabling an £eight million offer. After helping his country reach the World Cup quarter-finals, he said: "Sunderland has been my home since day one. We are all very happy. I decided to stay where I am; family is the most important thing. I am ready to make history with them", speaking to DAZN.
Smith said the start of the season would have felt underwhelming had Xhaka left after last year’s excitement, so his decision is encouraging. He believes supporters, the manager and the players will be delighted.
He also highlighted Xhaka’s influence for Switzerland and off the pitch, describing him as an important presence. In Smith’s view, keeping the captain is a major lift for Sunderland.
Xhaka’s next outing comes in the early hours of Sunday, when Switzerland face Argentina in the World Cup last eight.
