Villarreal unveiled Álex Freeman and Alfon González at Estadio de la Cerámica on Friday. Both spoke of helping in the second half of the season. Thiago Fernández also signed, then was loaned to Oviedo for minutes.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, CEO Fernando Roig Negueroles introduced Alfon, who arrives from Sevilla after injuries. He said the winger shone with Celta last season and, if he feels at home, the club could look to extend his stay.
Roig Negueroles said Freeman is a long-term signing, with interest predating Foyth’s injury that accelerated the move. He noted the full-back was named MLS young player of the year, has featured for his country’s senior side and will play at the World Cup in three or four months.
Alfon is recovering from a muscle problem and expects to return in two or three weeks. He thanked the club, said he is very happy and focused on regaining fitness to help his team-mates. He avoided looking beyond recovery when asked about next season.
He called his game direct and quick, felt Marcelino’s approach suits him near the box, and admitted injuries denied him rhythm at Sevilla.
Freeman said he proved himself in MLS and wants to show he can perform in LaLiga. He sees the tempo as faster, must adapt, decide quicker and give 100 per cent on a long contract.
He enjoys scoring and assisting, and aims to sharpen crossing, shooting and defensive duels, areas he says Marcelino stresses.
