FC Bayern are still fighting to keep Dayot Upamecano. Amid ongoing speculation, sporting director Max Eberl has now taken a public stance – and spoken clearly
Rumours have been circulating around Säbener Straße for days that talks between FC Bayern and Dayot Upamecano are at a standstill. Max Eberl has now clearly rejected these claims
After the 2:2 draw against Mainz, the Bayern sporting director clarified in response to a question from SPORT1: „What is now circulating around us again and again: He has canceled … threat … ultimatum – all nonsense. We are talking very well.“ Eberl made it clear that the negotiations have by no means escalated, but are rather in a decisive phase. „The eye of the needle is getting smaller and then he has to go through the eye of the needle. My wish would be: through the eye of the needle and not past it,“ the 52-year-old explained metaphorically
Eberl remained realistic with regard to a possible early deal, without losing his optimism. „I don’t know what will come in the individual doors of the Advent calendar 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. It would be desirable, but I can’t promise that,“ said the Bayern boss. At the same time, he emphasised: „Basically, I am very confident. We have already discussed several contract extensions together over weeks and months. It is our great wish.“

The 27-year-old Frenchman’s contract expires next summer and Upamecano is expected to officially start negotiating with other clubs from 1 January – a fact that will increase the pressure on Munich. Despite intensive talks, no agreement has been reached so far, which has recently fuelled the rumour mill
However, there has been no clear signal from the player’s side either. Upamecano himself recently spoke about his future in an interview with French broadcaster Téléfoot, emphasizing that he could still stay in Munich. When asked about a contract extension, the defender said unequivocally: „Yes, of course.“
This statement is in line with what Bayern’s management are saying, with Säbener Straße still convinced that Upamecano is a central building block for the future, both in sporting and structural terms. Under Vincent Kompany, the Frenchman has developed into a defensive leader whose importance for the stability of the defence is hard to replace
The poker for Upamecano thus remains open – but far from being broken off. While there is talk of threats and ultimatums externally, those responsible paint a much calmer picture internally.
