One month ago, Alvaro Arbeloa took charge of his final match as Real Madrid head coach, a 4-2 victory over Athletic Club at the Bernabeu. 15 days ago, his departure was made official by the club, but he’s chosen not to wallow in pity, and instead, he is about to make a swift return to management.
Despite a disappointing four-month tenure at the Bernabeu, which saw his Real Madrid side walk away with zero trophies, Arbeloa’s stock has risen. As a result of taking charge at the Bernabeu, he is more well-known to clubs, and that is one of the reasons why he is able to land in the Premier League.
Two weeks ago, it was reported that Fulham were in talks with Arbeloa over taking over their head coach position – which was vacated by Marco Silva, who joined Benfica as the replacement to Jose Mourinho, Arbeloa’s successor at Real Madrid. Negotiations have gone well between with the Premier League club, who are ready to make him their new manager.
As per Marca, Arbeloa is on the verge of being appointed as the next Fulham head coach. A full agreement is almost done, although there are minor details that still need to be resolved before he can start the next stage of his managerial career.
His Bernabeu tenure may not have gone well, but Arbeloa is still valued highly within Real Madrid. There has been an acceptance that it was a tough gig for him, especially considering it was his first in professional football – he only had experience in the club’s youth categories prior to replacing Xabi Alonso.
As such, it would be no surprise to see Real Madrid keep tabs on Arbeloa during his time in London. A return to the Bernabeu in the future cannot be ruled out if he shows growth as a manager.
