Ruben Amorim has ushered in a sense of calm confidence at Manchester United ahead of what could be a defining season. Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League’s Danyal Khan, Amorim was clear about the transformation happening at the club: “Last year sometimes I was worried going to the games. Now I’m excited to go to the games. It’s completely different.”
Amorim’s reflection encapsulates more than just personal emotion. It’s an insight into the evolving mindset at Manchester United. The message is one of competitive consistency. “We try to win the game in every minute of the game,” he said. “That is also really important. A little bit different from last season.”
Amorim highlighted the contributions of new arrivals like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško, all of whom have brought fresh energy and dynamism. “They are coming in one moment where the spirit is different, the place is different,” he told Sky Sports. “Sometimes we have a lot of very good players, but the scars were here and that can influence the dynamic of the team.”
This summer’s recruitment has been tactical and targeted. Amorim noted that these signings have not only improved performance on the pitch but helped change the team’s atmosphere off it. “They can help us not just on the pitch, but off the pitch. I feel the guys [are] more free because they were not here in the very, very difficult moments.”
Šeško, in particular, caught Amorim’s admiration. “I felt that Ben is even better than what I was thinking. Ben is going to be our striker for many, many years,” he said.
A key theme in Amorim’s interview was how to deal with scrutiny and external pressure, especially surrounding Manchester United’s goalkeepers. “You have to be like a monk… especially when you have problems,” he advised. With players like André and Tom set to share duties, particularly with the African Cup of Nations approaching, Amorim stressed: “In football, today one thing is true, next day is a lie… you always can change the way people see you.”
His approach to leadership under pressure is to drown out noise and focus on the facts. “We try to battle that narrative,” he said, referencing criticism of goalkeeper Alai, who despite a recent mistake, had “very good performances” last season.
Amorim’s Manchester United project is one of layers. “Success is to win titles,” he said candidly, “but we don’t know if we are going to achieve that.” Rather than declaring ambitions to win the Premier League this season, Amorim emphasised measured growth. “We are not in the moment that we can say we are clearly fighting for the league. We just need to get small steps and prepare every game like it’s a final.”

He also addressed improvements in defence, noting better preparation time this season. “Last year was just thinking about the next one, the next one. Sometimes you need to look back and work on the things that you are doing wrong.”
Harry Maguire’s recent comments were also mentioned, saying the squad feels “fitter” and “leaner.” Amorim confirmed those sentiments, crediting better structure and pressing. “You can see a lot of image against Arsenal, it is one against one and they can do it,” he added.
At the heart of it all is the importance of identity and entertainment. “We just want to be really competitive, trying to dominate games, trying to score goals, not get our fans bored,” said Amorim. The Manchester United manager’s commitment to restoring the club’s pride is evident. “Everyone knows that we have a goal, not for this season, but in three years, to win the Premier League,” he concluded.
By his own admission, Amorim is not promising instant silverware, but what’s clear is that the journey has begun. As supporters look ahead, his message is grounded in resilience and focus: “Block the noise, do the job and try to win games.”
