Analysis: Damsgaard's numbers among best in Premier League

It was impossible to disagree with Keith Andrews’ description of Saturday’s 4-3 win at Burnley as “clearly a crazy game of football”, or his glowing post-match praise for Mikkel Damsgaard.

Such scorelines are often labelled ‘thrillers’, but that barely does justice to what may prove to be the barmiest encounter of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

Fans of both clubs were left punch-drunk at Turf Moor as Scott Parker’s Burnley fought back from three goals down, only for Damsgaard’s late decider to secure a third-straight away win for the Bees.

Central to the plot, however, were two VAR calls that went Brentford’s way. At 3-3, Burnley forward Zian Flemming had a strike ruled out for offside, before Clarets substitute Ashley Barnes saw a last-gasp equaliser - which would have made it 4-4 - disallowed for handball.

Andrews admitted afterwards there had been “far too much drama for my liking”, but the attacking fluency of his front four will have greatly pleased the Irishman.

An 18th Premier League goal of the season for Igor Thiago, a close-range finish from Kevin Schade on his first start since returning from suspension and a Dango Ouattara assist further underlined the credentials of Brentford’s front three, who now boast 30 combined league goals this term.

Yet, it was Danish will-o’-the-wisp Damsgaard who stole the show.

Two goals and an assist spoke to a strong afternoon's work from Damsgaard, but it was the playmaker's "sensational" all-round display which drew praise from his head coach. "Right from the first whistle... he oozed class," stated Andrews afterwards.

Damsgaard drifted across the attacking third, constantly offering an angle, demanding the ball in tight pockets and knitting Brentford’s most dangerous moves together.

He may not be renowned for his aerial prowess, but it was the 25-year-old who broke the deadlock on nine minutes, ghosting in at the far post to nod in Ouattara’s corner.

The Bees’ second was more characteristic. Right where you want him, between the lines, Damsgaard slid a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Thiago, who finished unerringly into the far corner of Martin Dúbravka’s net.

That assist marked Damsgaard’s 14th over the past two seasons - with only Mohamed Salah (24), Bruno Fernandes (23) and Morgan Rogers (15) recording more in that timeframe.

As the contest swung wildly from end to end, it felt fitting that Damsgaard had the final say. Latching onto Rico Henry’s cross deep into stoppage-time, he took the sweetest of first touches before sweeping home an assured finish to send the Brentford supporters in the away end into raptures.

Those travelling fans have now watched Brentford collect 12 away points in 2026 - a haul only league leaders Arsenal can match.

Moreover, only Brentford, the Gunners and Manchester City have scored four or more away goals on multiple occasions in the Premier League this season, the Bees also doing so at Everton in January.

Seventh in the table and brimming with attacking confidence, Andrews’ side head to 10th-placed Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

If Turf Moor was “crazy”, what awaits at Vitality Stadium?
