Tactical switch-up?

Now, according to OK Diario, Arbeloa could be planning a tactical tweak in order to handle whatever surprise Pep Guardiola and Man City throw his way.

One option that has been gaining strength in recent hours at Valdebebas is the possibility that Arbeloa could reinforce the midfield with five midfielders, altering the team’s usual structure. The idea is being studied more seriously as the match approaches.

If the Madrid coach ultimately opts for this setup, the midfield could consist of Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, Thiago Pitarch, and Arda Guler.

With that structure, Vinicius Jr. would play as the only attacking reference, without the usual support of players like Brahim Díaz or Gonzalo Garcia.

Reasons to consider the five-man midfield setup

If Arbeloa decides to deploy five midfielders against Manchester City, the primary objective would be to contest control of the midfield zone. After all, Guardiola’s side typically dominates possession and presses aggressively high up the pitch.

By placing more players in central areas, Real Madrid would attempt to create additional passing options, maintain possession more effectively, and prevent the opponent from monopolizing the ball.

Numerical superiority in midfield would also make it easier to escape City’s pressing system, as players would have more nearby support when building attacks.

Another key advantage of this system is defensive balance. A midfield with five players can close interior spaces more effectively, which are precisely the areas where Manchester City usually creates danger by combining between the lines.

By tightening those spaces, Real Madrid could provide greater protection for their defence and disrupt City’s attacking rhythm. It would also improve the team’s ability to recover the ball quickly and launch counterattacks when the English side pushes forward.

That is where Vinicius’ role becomes crucial. In this setup he would be largely freed from defensive responsibilities, allowing him to focus entirely on attacking transitions and sprinting toward the opposition goal once possession is recovered.

This tactical idea has been present in Arbeloa’s thinking and appears to be gaining traction as kickoff approaches.
