Arne Slot Reflects on Southampton Victory, Mohamed Salah’s Brilliance, and Premier League Challenges
Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday offered drama, tension, and ultimately, triumph. Arne Slot’s side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points, but the Dutch manager was quick to emphasise the need for focus, with high-stakes fixtures against Manchester City and Real Madrid looming.
At St Mary’s, Liverpool’s dominance was evident, yet the match teetered on a knife-edge. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring for the Reds, but Southampton hit back through Adam Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes, leaving Slot’s side trailing 2-1 early in the second half.
It was Mohamed Salah, as so often before, who turned the tide. Two clinical finishes, including one from a pinpoint Ryan Gravenberch pass, swung the match in Liverpool’s favour. Reflecting on the game, Slot remarked, “‘Over the moon’ is a bit exaggerating, but of course we are really happy… after an hour we were 2-1 down.”

Salah’s influence was pivotal, and Slot did not shy away from praising his talisman. “The timing of the run and the way Mo finished it was special,” Slot noted. “That helped us really back into the game… In the last 25 minutes, it was a matter of time before we scored again.”
Salah’s performance underlined his knack for delivering when it matters most, offering Liverpool a lifeline and setting the tone for their eventual victory.
Slot was keen to highlight Southampton’s quality, noting that their tactics presented challenges despite their position at the bottom of the table. “Southampton can play through a press,” he said, commending his players for limiting their opponents’ ability to build from the back.
Despite a solid defensive effort, Liverpool conceded twice from limited opportunities, something Slot identified as a testament to Southampton’s newfound efficiency. “Today they were really effective… If they combine this with their usual style, they will bring in a lot of points in the future.”
With an eight-point cushion at the top, Slot remains cautious, drawing parallels to last season’s title race. “I think it was last season… Arsenal led by eight points, and [Manchester] City came back,” he said, underlining the relentless competition in the Premier League.
Slot also highlighted the challenges of balancing domestic and European commitments. “This league asks a lot from every player every weekend,” he explained, pointing to Liverpool’s squad depth as a key factor in navigating a demanding schedule.
Looking ahead, Liverpool’s immediate focus shifts to the Champions League, but the looming clash against Manchester City is impossible to ignore. As Slot concluded, his team may sit atop the table, but they remain acutely aware of the work required to stay there.
