Athletic to hire set-piece specialist and upgrade medical department in the short term

Athletic will appoint a set-piece specialist and bolster the men’s first-team medical department, the club’s director of football, Mikel González, said at the end-of-season briefing.

He arrived at San Mamés with reports supporting intervention in the first team’s preparation. The side have become one of La Liga’s weakest in attacking play and have also suffered defensively.

Against that backdrop, a dedicated set-piece coach is seen as essential at a club with the fifth biggest budget in the league.

A congested calendar has not helped on the injury front. Key figures such as Nico Williams were managed carefully for much of the year, which affected preparation for the run-in.
