The Madrid derby lived up to its billing, with Atlético de Madrid ending Real Madrid’s unbeaten start in spectacular fashion.

In a thrilling clash with two comebacks, Diego Simeone’s side ran out 5-2 winners at the Metropolitano, marking the first time in 75 years that Atlético have scored five goals at home against their city rivals.

Despite the defeat, Real remain top of La Liga on 18 points, though Barcelona can overtake them on Sunday, sitting just two points behind. Atlético climb to fourth with 12 points. Notably, this result extends the run of La Liga games in which Real have failed to beat Atlético to six.

Both teams now turn their attention to the Champions League. Atlético host Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday, while Real travel to Kazakhstan to face Kairat.

An Electric First Half

The Metropolitano was rocking from the off, with Atlético pressing high. The opening breakthrough came in the 14th minute as Giuliano Simeone’s cross found Le Normand, who rose above everyone to head Atlético into the lead.

Real, however, have Kylian Mbappé, and the French forward needed just over ten minutes to level. Linking up with Arda Guler, he slotted across the goalkeeper, with Guler registering his third assist and Mbappé his eighth league goal of the campaign.

The equaliser shifted the momentum. At 36 minutes, Le Normand’s mistake allowed Vinícius Júnior to dance past him on the left before finding Guler, who completed a swift turnaround to put Real ahead.

Atlético nearly responded through Julián Álvarez, whose strike hit the post, and a Lenglet goal was correctly ruled out, before Sorloth eventually restored parity with a well-placed header.

Atlético Take Control

The intensity carried into the second half, and within seven minutes, Atlético regained the lead. Arda Guler’s clumsy challenge on Nico González conceded a penalty, which Julián Álvarez converted confidently.

The rout was sealed from a free-kick, with Álvarez delivering a perfect strike into the top-right corner past Courtois.

In stoppage time, Antoine Griezmann added the fifth, finishing neatly past the goalkeeper to complete a historic victory - Atlético’s first five-goal home win over Real since the 1949/50 season.
