Barcelona able to terminate defender’s contract in 2027

In the last 24 hours, it has been revealed that Danish defender Andreas Christensen will sign a new contract with Barcelona. The 30-year-old, who has played less than 100 matched since joining from Chelsea in 2022, had looked destined to leave when his current deal expires on the 30th June, but instead, he will pen a renewal.

The last couple of seasons have been particularly dismal for Christensen, but despite having only played 24 times since Hansi Flick took over as manager, he’s shown enough for the German to give the green light for a contract renewal to be offered. He will sign on until the summer of 2028, although Barcelona will have the option to let him go early if necessary.

According to MD, there is a break clause included in Christensen’s new contract. Should player or club be unhappy next summer, either one can decide to activate this, and it would see the central defender depart as a free agent.

Why has Hansi Flick decided to keep Christensen?

The decision to offer Christensen is one that has bemused many Barcelona supporters, but it is one that was led by Flick. He sees the Dane as someone with much-needed experience, while his ability to play in either centre-back position and in midfield is also valued by the Catalans’ head coach.

Flick has done very little wrong since taking over as Barcelona manager two years ago, so he should always be afforded some slack when it comes to his decision-making. The choice to renew Christensen may not be popular, but if he ends up being a vital player next season, it will be hailed as a masterstroke.

However, there is every chance that it follows the same trend as the last two seasons, and if it does, Barcelona would almost certainly activate the clause that would terminate Christensen’s contract next summer.
