Barcelona have made an attempt to keep Andreas Christensen beyond the end of the season, but their offer may not be the most appealing that he receives in the coming months. The Danish defender has spent much of the last three seasons battling injuries, and Barcelona’s decision to offer him a new deal surprised many.
Christensen is out of contract this summer, four years after joining on a free. The 29-year-old is currently out until May, and could return before the end of the season is not expected to be a factor. Having recently returned to individual training on the grass though, his return could be as soon as this month. Barcelona have already sent an offer to his agent.
The information obtained by Sport is that the contract offer includes a salary reduction of around 50%, and is for two years. Barcelona feel he can be a useful part of the squad, and are impressed with his exemplary professionalism during his time at the club, but clearly want to do a deal on the cheap due to his injury record. It has also been reported that Barcelona could be tempted to move Christensen on if they can strike a deal for Alessandro Bastoni.
There is little clarity within the club over whether Christensen will accept the offer though. Previously he has commented that his priority is to stay in the Catalan capital, but that was before the size of the wage cut became clear. Barcelona are yet to receive a response, and there is an acknowledgement that he may wish to test the market as a free agent instead. His ability to get fit before the end of the season may well have a major impact on the perspective of both Barcelona and other clubs.
