With the transfer window having closed six weeks ago, Barcelona have switched their focus to more pressing areas of late. One of those is contract renewals, with several first team players seeing their current deals expire in 2026.

Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen and Robert Lewandowski among those currently in the final 12 months of their current contract, which is also the case for Frenkie de Jong. The 28-year-old has been a vital player for Barcelona since the start of 2025, which is why serious efforts have been made to ensure that he does not leave for free next summer.

Talks had been delayed due to an agent issue, but in recent weeks, they have been back on track. Recently, it was reported that an agreement had been reached between Barcelona and de Jong, and according to MD, everything has now been finalised.

De Jong will sign new contract on Wednesday

As per the report, de Jong will sign on until 2029, thus extending his stay by an additional three years. His new contract, which will be signed on Wednesday alongside Barcelona president Joan Laporta, will include a €500m release clause, which underlines his importance to the club.

Back in 2024, it had almost been taken for granted that de Jong would not sign a new contract with Barcelona, which would have meant he left in the summer for a cut-price deal, or in 2026 as a free agent. However, his performances on the pitch have meant that he is an invaluable member of Hansi Flick’s squad, which made his renewal a priority for sporting director Deco and co.

De Jong will be keen to lay his future to rest for a while upon signing his new contract, as he and his Barcelona teammates prepare for an important stretch of fixtures after the international break.
