FC Barcelona and the 1:1 rule have become inseparable topics in recent years. The club’s financial struggles have forced many Blaugrana fans to follow complex accounting debates as they try to understand the magnitude of the situation.

Since last year, there has been much talk about when, or if, the club will return to the 1:1 rule. Timelines have been thrown around without much concrete evidence, and making moves in the market has continued to be difficult.

Now, after months of uncertainty, there is a clear sign of progress. According to SPORT, Barcelona are just €14 million away from returning to the 1:1 rule.

It is the closest the club has been in years, and the board knows precisely what steps are needed to reach this target by next summer. Achieving this milestone would allow the club to reinvest freely in player registrations and new signings, providing long-term stability.

A major factor in Barcelona’s progress has been the strategic renewal of Frenkie de Jong. Extending the Dutch midfielder’s contract until 2029 allows the club to amortize his transfer fee over a longer period, providing crucial financial relief in the short term.

Other squad management decisions have also contributed to the financial recovery. Gavi’s serious injury and the decision not to sign a replacement reduced the guarantee required to register the squad from €18 million to approximately €9 million.

This direct saving has strengthened the club’s wage cap balance. At the same time, new commercial partnerships have boosted revenue figures, adding further breathing room for sporting operations.

The final push appears to be the imminent loan of club captain Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to Girona. The German goalkeeper, one of the highest earners in the squad, will temporarily leave the club, with Girona covering 15 to 20 percent of his remaining salary for the season.

This is expected to save Barcelona around €1.5 million over six months, closing part of the €14 million gap and providing the final piece of the financial puzzle.

With Ter Stegen’s loan nearly done, the board is putting the final pieces in place, and if everything falls into place, Barcelona could achieve the 1:1 rule by next summer, allowing the club to operate freely in the transfer market and strengthen the squad without the restrictions that have defined recent seasons.

While we will believe it when it is announced officially, it does feel like the club is now closer than ever. Let us wait and see how things play out in the coming weeks.
