Franco Mastantuono has become a household name in his native Argentina, thanks to his brilliant performances at River Plate.

Earlier in the summer, Real Madrid were heavily linked with a move for the young attacking midfielder, but the transfer did not materialise.

Despite being 17, Mastantuono has attracted interest across Europe and it appears Barcelona, too, have now joined the race.

Barcelona monitoring Mastantuono’s progress

According to a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are keeping tabs on Mastantuono as they weigh up a potential move in the near future.

In October and November, the Catalans had sent scouts to watch him closely in action for River Plate.

An attacking midfielder by trade, the Argentine has racked up 37 competitive appearances for River Plate, impressing onlookers with his ability to create chances in the final third.

Barcelona, therefore, are eyeing a future move for the teenage sensation, who has become an established name in his native Argentina.

However, Mastantuono is more of a long-term project for Barcelona, who are not seeking an immediate move for the Argentine.

Although Mastantuono is eligible for a move to Europe next summer, it’s highly unlikely Barcelona would make any attempt, especially considering the club’s economic situation.

After all, the youngster has recently extended his contract at River Plate, where the value of his release clause was increased to €50 million.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Mastantuono, especially with Barcelona now joining the race to sign the Argentine starlet.
