Football can be brutally unforgiving, especially for a young player, and Pau Cubarsi experienced that harsh reality on what turned out to be a painful European night for Barcelona.

In a moment that completely shifted the momentum of the game, the teenage centre-back was shown a red card just before half-time after a clash with Giuliano Simeone.

The decision left Barcelona with ten men at a crucial stage of the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid.

What made the situation even more damaging was that from the resulting set-piece, Julian Alvarez found the net.

After the final whistle, the young defender took responsibility in a way that reflects his maturity.

He shared images from the match on social media, accompanied by an apology to teammates and supporters. It was a gesture that did not go unnoticed within the dressing room.

Support poured in

Players like Dani Olmo, Ronald Araujo, and Marc Bernal reached out publicly, showing that the squad remains firmly behind one of its brightest young talents.

But perhaps the most powerful backing came from those who understand the pressure of defending Barcelona’s badge better than anyone.

Club legends Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, two figures synonymous with defensive excellence, also stepped in to support the youngster.

Pique acknowledged the difficulty of such situations, especially for a player so early in his career, stating,

“Keep your head held high, mate. You’ll smash them in the comeback,” he wrote.

It must be noted that Pique has long been vocal about his admiration for Cubarsi, and the Barcelona icon’s message reinforces that trust.

As such, Barcelona’s defeat to Atletico Madrid was marred by controversial refereeing and the team took a major step by filing an official complaint to UEFA, raising several incidents that went against them.
