FC Barcelona went into the break against Rayo Vallecano with the lead, but not before a brief moment of anxiety around Joan Garcia. The goalkeeper had already come into the match under some scrutiny after the physical scare he suffered against Newcastle, so any sign of discomfort was always going to catch attention.

According to SPORT, Joan gave Barca another fright during the first half when he appeared to feel discomfort again. Hansi Flick assured everyone that he was fine to start today’s game but the early scare set the cat amongst the pigeons.

Wojciech Szczesny got ready to come on but Joan chose to continue. In an end, it was a relief that the Spaniard could continue. Barcelona, though, were able to steady themselves and reach half-time 1-0 in front. That is the part Flick will care about most in the short term, because Rayo are exactly the kind of opponent who can turn a match messy if they sense uncertainty.

Joan staying on, and Barca keeping their advantage, allowed the team to avoid a potentially destabilising twist before the interval. From a Barca perspective, the bigger issue is what this means going forward.

Joan has become too important for the club at this stage of the season for any recurring physical problem to be treated lightly, especially with Atletico Madrid and the Champions League quarter-finals looming after the international break.

So while the half-time scoreline was positive, the real sigh of relief was that Barcelona appeared to survive another scare involving one of their key players. If Joan can come through the rest of the game without further trouble, Barca will feel they have escaped with more than just a lead.
